Lake Atitlán

Lake Atitlán sits in the Guatemalan highlands of the Sololá department. It’s a deep volcanic lake surrounded by dramatic mountains and three towering volcanoes (San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán). Many call it the most beautiful lake in Central America. The area is also rich in Mayan culture, with Tz’utujil and Kaqchikel villages around its shores, each with distinct traditions, weaving styles, and local festivals.

San Pedro La Laguna

San Pedro, on the southwest shore of the lake, is known for its mix of backpacker energy and traditional Mayan life. It’s a popular spot for:

  • Spanish-language schools

  • Hiking up Volcán San Pedro

  • A lively café and nightlife scene

Despite tourism, the town retains its indigenous roots, with colorful markets, weaving cooperatives, and locals still speaking Tz’utujil.

San Marcos La Laguna

San Marcos is often considered the “spiritual” village of Lake Atitlán. It has become a hub for yoga, meditation, alternative healing, and holistic retreats. Travelers come for:

  • Lakeside yoga studios and meditation centers

  • Wellness workshops and retreats

  • Quiet atmosphere compared to San Pedro

It’s much smaller and calmer than San Pedro, appealing to those seeking rest, wellness, and nature immersion.
