Smoked Old Fashion

Smoked Old Fashion

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey

  • ¼ oz simple syrup or 1 sugar cube

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • Orange peel (for zest)

  • Ice (preferably one large cube)

For Smoking:

  • Wood chips (cherry, oak, or hickory work best)

  • Smoking gun OR

  • Glass dome OR

  • Torch and wood plank (DIY version)

  • Optional: cinnamon sticks, rosemary sprigs, or star anise for aromatic smoke

🧪 Instructions (with Smoking Gun or Dome):

  1. Build the drink
In a mixing glass, stir whiskey, syrup, and bitters with ice. Strain into a rocks glass over a large cube.

  2. Prepare the smoke
Using a smoking gun or wood plank:

    • Smoking gun method: Fill the serving glass with smoke, cap with a dome or coaster. Let rest for 30–60 seconds, then remove.

    • Torch method: Torch a wooden plank or rosemary sprig until it smolders. Invert the empty glass over it for ~20 seconds. Then flip the glass and pour the drink in.

  3. Garnish
Express orange peel over the top and drop it in. Optional: torch the peel slightly for extra aroma.

🧠 Tips for Next-Level Smoke:

  • Glass rinse: Swirl smoke inside the glass before pouring the drink.

  • Flavor wood: Use cherry wood for a sweeter profile, oak for boldness, pecan for a nutty edge.

  • Layer herbs: Smoking rosemary, thyme, or cinnamon sticks adds complexity.

🔥 Variations:

  • Smoked Maple Whiskey Sour: Add egg white, lemon, and maple syrup with bourbon — then smoke it.

  • Smoky Manhattan: Use cherrywood smoke and Carpano Antica vermouth.

  • Peated Twist: Add ¼ oz Laphroaig or Ardbeg (Islay Scotch) for deep internal smokiness — no smoke gun needed.
