Mineral Springs
Established in 1811, French Lick began as a French trading post near a natural salt lick, which attracted wildlife and early settlers. The town gained prominence in the 19th century due to its mineral springs, believed to have healing properties. In 1845, Dr. William Bowles constructed the first hotel to capitalize on the therapeutic reputation of the springs. The area flourished as a resort destination, with the French Lick Springs Hotel becoming a centerpiece. In 2006, the French Lick Resort Casino opened, revitalizing the town's appeal as a tourist destination.
Mineral Springs History…
The allure of French Lick's mineral springs dates back to the early 19th century. In 1845, Dr. William Bowles established the French Lick Springs Hotel, capitalizing on the believed healing properties of the local springs. The most famous of these was "Pluto's Well," named in 1869 by Dr. Joseph G. Rogers. The water, rich in sodium, magnesium sulfate, and lithium salts, was bottled and sold as "Pluto Water," marketed as a remedy for various ailments like gout and digestive issues. Its slogan, "When nature won’t, Pluto will," highlighted its laxative effects. However, production ceased in 1971 when lithium became a controlled substance.
