The Lodge on Lake Lure | North Carolina

In the early 1930s, the North Carolina State Troopers built the Lodge as both a retreat from city life and a gathering place for camaraderie. According to local lore, donkeys helped with the excavation of the land, and troopers seeking a break would call ahead to reserve a room for just a dollar or two. Old photographs—some still displayed in the bar—show troopers relaxing by the lake, their main goal seemingly to connect with one another in a peaceful setting. Nearly a century later, while the Lodge is now open to the public, its spirit remains the same: offering a place for people to reconnect with nature—and with each other.

Appalachia Restaurant offers an elevated casual dining experience in an intimate lakeside setting at the Lodge on Lake Lure. With sweeping views and a menu rooted in authentic Appalachian cuisine, the restaurant highlights the region’s rich, multi-ethnic heritage and the bounty of its local ingredients. Each dish reflects the spirit of the mountains—deep tradition, bold flavors, and a true sense of place.
