The Sweet History of Cupcakes
Cupcakes have been delighting dessert lovers for more than two centuries. The earliest mention of "cupcakes" dates back to 1796, when American cook Amelia Simmons included a recipe for "a light cake to bake in small cups" in her cookbook American Cookery. These early versions weren’t called "cupcakes" yet — but they were the start of something sweet.
By 1828, the term “cupcake” officially appeared in Eliza Leslie’s Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats. The name referred not only to the size (cakes baked in teacups or ramekins) but also to the way ingredients were measured — by the cup — which was revolutionary at the time.
Unlike traditional cakes that required weighing out ingredients, cupcakes made baking more accessible and consistent, especially in American kitchens.
As baking technology improved, so did cupcake molds and ovens, allowing bakers to create individually portioned cakes with greater ease. In the 20th century, cupcakes became a staple at birthday parties, school celebrations, and bake sales.
